Following the successful publication of the third edition of A Short History of the Royal Marines (see below), the society turned its attention on improving the presentation of its special publications. These special publications cover a variety of subjects related to the corps and are delivered gratis to all members of the society (as they are paid for by the subscription fee). They are also made available to buy in the shop at the Royal Marines Museum, Eastney.

Over the years, these publications had been typed, laid out and had covers designed by members of the society, and had been printed using varying levels of technological sophistication. The print quality of the books had improved significantly since the society had started using Antony Rowe as its printers, but they decided to bring me in to standardise the layout, design and create a proper house style for not only their new special publications, but also to produce brand new editions of some of the older titles that had gone out of print (but were still very much in demand). They were also interested in moving into print-on-demand in order to free up distribution channels and ensure the special publications stay available.

Production of the first two titles (an old title an a new one) began simultaneously in autumn 2009. Below are the covers of all the books in print so far, along with a PDF page sample demonstrating a selection of the styles developed for the text.

This freelance project, commissioned by the Royal Marines Historical Society, was to design the page layout and cover for the book, 'A Short History of the Royal Marines', as well as working on the advertising flyer (used as an insert in various appropriate publications, a mail shot, and on display in the Museum shop, Eastney, Portsmouth).

The book was reprinted in 2003, but due to major world events the decision was made in 2004 to begin work on a revised, enlarged and updated Second Edition of the book. The Second Edition was brought about by a large standing order from the Commando Training Centre RM, Lympstone, where all young officers, NCOs and recruits are trained. They are now issued with with this publication to provide a background to the teaching of Corps history. The Third Edition was published late in 2007, with further updates to both the main text and the appendicies.

Below is a link to the flyer (double sided) and an example of a page spread, both in PDF (Acrobat/Adobe Reader) format, as well as the covers for all three editions.

April 2007

After completing the cover design for the book Children of the 23rd Century: The Secret of the Lost Planet (book one in a planned series of six), the opportunity arose to work on the official website, creating the concepts for page layout and design, as well as the menu system. This 'first build' of the website consisted of eight interlinked pages, as well as content such as downloadable wallpapers for various screen resolutions.

After this initial design and construction phase, management of the site had to be passed to a company who had the time to not only to add new pages when required, but also to be constantly updating the news and other sections. Ugly Toad (www.uglytoad.com) have, since they took over the task in the summer of 2007, made many impovements and additions while keeping true to the original design concept.

THE GOLDEN HINDE CHILDREN'S ACTIVITY GUIDE

The Golden Hinde (www.goldenhinde.org)
December 2003

A3 (folds to A4)

This freelance project had a fairly open brief. It called for a Childrens Activity Guide for the Golden Hinde replica, docked near London Bridge. Their offices provided a large amount of publicity material, enabling the design of what could be described as an 'Elizabethan tourist brochure'. The booklet was double sided A3 landscape, folded into A4 portrait.
